The University of Maroua (Cameroon) was created through a presidential decree in 2008. The Institution now has 7 main Departments: the Faculty of Arts and Humanities, the Faculty of Sciences, the Faculty of Economics and Management, the Faculty of Legal and Political Sciences, the Ecole Normale Supérieure, the Institute of Mines and Petroleum Industries and the Higher Institute of the Sahel. The mission of this University system is: to develop and transmit knowledge, support all forms cultural research using the highest standards for progress, facilitate access to higher education for all people, contribute to the community in the form of social and cultural promotion and finally, to develop the practice of bi-lingualism. At present, the University benefits from a funding agreement for training in the promotion of « visual anthropology » with the University of Tromso in Norway. The aim of this training is to train anthropologists who use the camera as a research tool, allowing for various sections of heritage to be inventoried and archived for historic value. The aim of this programming is to ensure that audiovisual data connected with heritage can be collected, stored and disseminated. Given that the University of Maroua is a young institution, many departments are a work in progress. That said, this institution has several departments that focus on heritage-management issues, including: the Department of Fine Arts and Heritage Sciences; the Faculty of Arts and Humanities (with a specialization in archeology, history of civilizations, science and technique); the Department of African Literature and Civilization; and finally the Department of Anthropology and Sociology, Philosophy and Psychology, Languages, Literature and Geography.
